Greetings from Esteban Sabar Gallery, I am sometimes struck while pacing this mortal temple -- that for whatever reasons evokes hushed and reverent tones of visitors -- by the triumph of the mundane, the objective, the literal. But these three artists share works, ranging from the abstract to the human form, that reminds one of how few mental steps exist between the everyday and the divine. Rocky Rische-Baird In these new painting and drawings we see Rocky's trademark confident surrealism becoming grounded in strong geometric blocks of saturated color. He comfortably juggles metaphor and symbol and the results stun!-- mundane objects become participants in striking esoteric ritual, evocative of significant but undeciphered Egyptian murals or the inpenetrable allegories of early Renaissance paintings. Hunter Mack This Berkeley based artist displays his series of fastidious drawings, “Houston Works 1-8.” Each of the eight drawings will be paired with a reproduction painting. Parallel black inked lines on white paper, these tightly formal works evoke topographic maps, fingerprints, and Rorschach ink blot tests simultaneously. Clay Cahoon Newby to West Coast exhibition, Clay Cahoon evokes the adage of the body as a sacred vessel. His impactitive charcoal figure drawings address that most mobeus-like of words in the art world: academic. Cahoon does not stop at the human form--in one image, two tubes of oil paint drizzle their contents onto a suggestively upright toothbrush. Come to our Thursday reception from 5 to 9:30 pm.
